Blog 15 - Birmingham Grand Prix
Feb 23
The first race of the year is always the most nerve-racking! And for me Birmingham was no exception. I was nervous but at the same time, I knew the nerves are a good thing and show you care. Also they help get me up for the battle and help raise my performance.
I felt good during my warm up. I was relaxed and my body felt good. I was beginning to look forward to the race. It was a good quality field; some top-notch competitors in the race, so I knew it could get bumpy when we break on the 1st lap. Nick my coach told me to be strong at the break and expect it to be close, use an elbow if I have to!!
We enter the call room 25 minutes before the race, the officials check our gear and spikes, and we sit for a bit, just a few officials, my 5 competitors and myself!! The nervous tension is immense!! We then walk to the lift and the 6 of us hop in. ^ Athletes about to do battle on the track in 2 x 2 metre box!!!
We get to call room 2 and are given our lane number stickers. We are then told to put on our spikes and wait till we are called. Few of the lads run to the toilet, nerves make you pee!!
We are then led on to the track...game time!!!
I set my blocks and do a few strides around the bend. Big crowd and I can hear people shouting my name!!
I think positive thoughts, go through my same routine "Lets do this"!!
The gun goes and I drive, pump my legs and arms hard!! I stumble, a little rusty!!! Get into my running on the back straight, open up a little, around the bend and into the break. The guy in lane 4 comes up on my inside, I put on a spurt to make sure I get to the bell ahead of him and tuck in behind the leader Chambers. Chambers goes wide on the bend leaving a gap, I have him, I go on the inside, and I'm away, clear track ahead!
I try to stay relaxed, pumping my arms, trying to keep my shoulders down and not tense up...around the final bend, I feel really strong!!
Cross the line...wow! The clock stops at 45.52. I'm surprised, it felt easy!!
Well, that is how my race at the weekend went. I was really happy with my run. A great confidence boost. I felt really good, very strong and I know there is more in the tank.
As a treat, I hit the chip shop for dinner. I haven't had a take away in months. Large chips and a battered sausage please Squillacil!!!
