I was still a bit tired on Monday from my race in Geneva. Monday's session was ok, just a light enough grass session.

As I was racing again this weekend, Tuesday was the main session of the week, split 400m, which is 200m, 90 seconds, 200m. It's race pace over the first 200m and then what ever you have left. I had a good session, but the wind up the home straight on my 2nd 200m was a killer, not nice at all.

In the gym with Pete on Wednesday, light, fast activation weights. There is no need to be lighting heavy coming into a race. I idea is think, act fast and explosive.

I was flying out to Budapest on Thursday evening, so I did a light block session in the morning, just 2 drive out from blocks over 120m, get a feel for the race.

Packed my bags and headed to the airport; don't have to travel too far, East midlands airport is only up the road.

The rest of the Irish team will arrive from Dublin around the same time in Budapest. We are all competing the European Team Competition, 1st league, one below the top league. It's a competitive league and it is all about staying up in this division. In years gone by we have been in the bottom league, the standards are poor and it is always in the armpit of Europe.

So we all compete in our relevant events to win points. I was down to do the 400m and the 4x400m relay.

I was rooming with Paul Hession; I always room with Hess, easy going lad and a good room mate on these trips.

I actually felt a bit old on the team this year, I did my fist European Cup in 2003, and this year there was a few young athletes on the team, but as we all did well over the weekend, the future is looking bright.

I had my 400m on Saturday evening; I had some good competition, mainly from Sweden and Belgium. Felt ok warming up, a little sluggish, but was up for the fight and ready to roll.

I flew out of the block and got into my running down the back straight. Coming into the home straight, the Belgian come up on my inside, I tensed up a little and gave him a metre. He won and I was just behind him. I was annoyed at myself, I felt I gave him the race by switching off around the top bend, and I didn't feel I ran my own race. But on a positive note, my time was good, so if I can have a bad run and still run quick, I know there is a lot more there. Second run of the summer, early days and im looking forward to my next race.

Was back on the track on Sunday for the relay. There was difference of opinions about what legs people should do; my reasoning didn't stand up according to a few people. We came in 5th overall, was a good performance, but if im honest I think we could have got more out of a few legs, including mine.

In the end if was a great Team performance from Ireland and we finish 8th out of 12 teams, avoiding relegation by a long stretch.
