As it is the week before the European Championships, it is all about keeping things simple and relaxed. Training is mainly light, with one or two bigger sessions thrown in. The early part of the week I didn't have too much to do, mainly light fast work, drills and fast sprints.
All the hard work is done by this stage, not much you can do in the last few days before a championship. Some athletes go crazy at this time, working extra hard thinking that they need to push the boat out in order to cram the last bit of training in, is that extra bit that is going to make them run, jump or throw that little bit better, no its not, its not the leaving cert!! The work is done, time to have faith and relax!
It can get boring on the lead up to a championship, almost like a count down of days. So its important you feel comfortable where you are and the people you are with. Helping you relax and chill out. Hence the reason I stayed put here in Loughborough and didn't go on the pre champ's training camp. Each to their own!
I have just spent the time doing what I normally do, going about my training as I would any other week of the year. Keeping it simple.
I flew into Barcelona on Saturday, a short flight nothing major. Nice hotel, with the beach just around the corner. People always think its great to visit all these cities, but to be honest, I don't get to see much, and your focus is all on your competition. You could be in any city in the world really. Hopefully at the end of the championships Il have time to catch up with my friends and family who have come out to support me. I know by that stage they will know the best places for a nice pint!!
Im rooming with Paul Hession, Ireland fastest man!! I always room with Hess, he's a good lad, we get on well and its good to room with someone you can be yourself around. We end up spending a lot of time in the hotel room together, so its important you get along. The time is spent chilling out really, watching DVD's and chatting, and the gaps are filled with lunch and dinner. That's the way this goes, as an elite athlete you have to get used to doing nothing!!
So by this stage of the summer Im just looking forward to getting the championships started, it is what it is!
I have worked hard over the winter, focusing on the process and now I will let the outcome look after itself. Graduation day approaches!
My main aim of the championships is to run well of course, and if that's good enough to win or get a medal so be it.
